Event - Fireworks to commemorate the 85th anniversary of signing a peace treaty between Russia and Estonia in 1920. Imagine that, Estonia actually won a war, and with Russia no less. Patriotism was high in the newly independent state of Estonia in 1920, whereas the Russian army was in a disarray at the time. As a result, instead of gaining a quick victory that Russia was hoping for, the Russian army was forced to withdraw while Estonian troops were closing in on St Petersburg, the capital of Russia at the time. Not surprisingly, faced with the prospect of possibly losing their capital, the Russians offered to sign a peace treaty and recongize the independence of Estonia. Since Estonians had only been fighting for their freedom and capturing the Russian capital had never been their aim... they gracefully accepted:)

Photography - I was happy to have received my remote release cable from eBay just a few days before, but - "shock and horror!" - there is still some visible camera shake on the pictures. Naturally I was using a tripod, but it's possible that the cold weather made the remote release cable stiffer than it should have been, so moving it in my hand must have transferred some shake to the camer as well (although admittedly my tripod isn't of the best of quality either). As a backup, I also had an IR program installed on my Palm handheld computer, which can control the shutter of the camera from up to 2-3 m away. Using a PDA to control the camera is somewhat trickier - I'd need to hold the PDA somewhere in front of the camera to make a connection between the IR ports of both the PDA and the camera - but if that's the only way to minimize camera shake (apart from buying a sturdier tripod), then that's what I'll do. Next year:)
