Event - A Friday night with Sin City at Club "Tallinn". No special superstar guests this time, but since I missed most of the events in January, I wanted to test my new 50 mm prime lens and I had just received a camera hand grip from eBay to "glue" the camera to my hand, I couldn't wait to get back into action.
Photography - Experimented with the 50 mm f/1.8 prime and let the strobes in the ceiling of the club to provide the necessary flash. Worked fine when I was actually able to get the shot. But I discovered that the problem with using a 50 mm prime in a club is that with such a long zoom I can no longer get close to have an unobstructed view and standing back inevitably means people WILL get in the way of what I'm trying to shoot. I'm starting to feel a need for a universal lens, which would start at around 18 mm / F2.8 and zoom into around 70-125 mm / F4.5-5.6 - now that would be perfect! BTW the camera grip made a bigger difference than I expected. With the camera grip, the camera literally stays glued to your hand and handling the controls, switching between portrait, landscape and various shooting angles is immeasurably easier. The grip really helps to concentrate on taking the pictures instead of trying to balance and grip the camera all the time (which is especially tiresome in a nightclub setting).
