Event - A welcoming party for all new ESN foreign students at Püssirohu Kelder. As always, I've only selected a handful of pictures for the gallery. I will post a link to the additional pictures (about 100+ of them) to the ESN mailing list soon, so if you want to get the link, please subscribe to the ESN students mailing list by sending an e-mail to listmanager@esn.ee. The pictures will later also appear on the ESN Tartu web page (which is currently down) and they'll be included on the photo CD issued at the end of the semester. Photography - I decided to make this a no-flash portrait night and take the f/1.8 50mm prime lens for a stroll. Switched to AV mode (at f/1.8) and the resulting shutter speeds hovered around 1/15th of a second. This apparently is ALMOST enough for sharp pictures with this lens, unless you're careless. Well I was careless, so lots of pictures were wasted due to camera shake. Additionally the 50mm lens has often problems focusing in low light conditions, thus many of the resulting pictures were off focus due to poor automatic focusing. The focusing can be fixed in the future with a flash that won't fire when shutter is pressed, but still lends its near infra-red light to aid focus. My current fully-automatic 380EX can't do this, so I definitely need to trade up in the future and maybe resort to manual focusing until I do.
